Amputation Surgery

Amputation surgery is a surgical procedure that involves amputating a body part, usually an arm or leg, for medical reasons or as a result of trauma. Amputation is performed to treat conditions that cause serious health problems or loss of function of a body part or to ensure that the patient can continue his life and mobility.

Amputation surgery may be performed for the following main reasons:

Trauma: Severe tissue damage resulting from an accident, injury, or other serious trauma.

Vascular Problems: Problems in the nutrition of tissues as a result of vascular diseases or impaired blood flow.
Tumors: Malignant tumors or cancer may require removal of a body part.
Infections: Deep infections or serious infections such as gangrene can cause tissue to die.
Congenital Anomalies: Congenital abnormalities or inadequate development of a body part.

Amputation surgery may include the following basic steps:
Preparation: Before surgery, a detailed evaluation is made between the patient and the surgeon. Which limb needs to be amputated and the level of amputation (for example, below the knee or below the elbow) are determined.
Anesthesia: During amputation, the patient is usually under general anesthesia, thus eliminating pain and sense of consciousness.
Cutting and Amputating: The surgeon begins the cutting process and amputates the body part. This process varies depending on why the limb is being amputated and the level of amputation.
Controlling Bleeding: Vessels are ligated or cauterized to control bleeding at the incision site.
Tissue Arrangement and Coverage: If possible, healthy tissue pieces are used to arrange the amputation site. It is then closed with skin stitches or tissue ties.
Postoperative Care: In the postoperative period, the patient may require regular follow-up and rehabilitation to ensure healing of the amputation site.
Amputation surgery can be a physically and psychologically challenging process and represents a major life change for patients.
Therefore, post-amputation rehabilitation, use of prosthetics and emotional support are important.

Amputation surgery is a complex surgical procedure that requires a personalized approach, and collaboration between patient and surgeon is critical to the success of this process.
